A card index to a variety of sources pertaining to Nauvoo and Hancock County, Illinois, covering approximately 1805 -1880, with emphasis on the period 1839-1850. The entries are not in strict alphabetical order and users may need to look under a variety of subject headings. The index, containing mostly personal names, but also some subject and locality entries, was compiled by NRI secretary, Rowena J. Miller, beginning in 1962.
Under the heading "census" are names extracted from the 1830 Federal census of Hancock County, Illinois; the 1840 Federal census of Hancock and Adams counties, Illinois, and Lee County, Iowa; and the 1850 Federal census of Utah Territory. Under the heading "property transactions" are entries filed by legal description, based on Nauvoo lot, block, or addition numbers. The index also includes many grantee-grantor land index cards, with such entries in some instances being filed under both grantor and grantee names.
The index also includes entries from the following types of records for all Nauvoo residents and for Latter-day Saints residing elsewhere (but especially in Hancock County); land records, tax lists, marriage and other vital records, cemetery records, court records (including probate records), newspapers, periodicals, biographical sources, LDS church records, etc. It also contains entries about revelations, names, and donations listed in the Law of the Lord book, dating to the Kirtland, Ohio period.
The card file also contains an index to incomplete Church financial records; a listing of the streets of Nauvoo; and entries about city council ordinances, pre-Mormon land holders, schools, and the work of the Hancock County sheriff.
A supplemental index begins partway through reel 12.
The card file also contains a section for a Seminar held in 1965, listing many Nauvoo categories and the names of the persons managing each.
