Record of work being done in Historian's Office (through early 1972) and in Historical Department (since early 1972). Some entries also include information about events taking place in Salt Lake City or in church generally.
Through 1970, Historian's Office journal was kept in bound volumes. Through 1946, volumes contain one day's handwritten entry per page. Through 1970, there are multiple handwritten entries per day. Entries are typed from 1971 on, with entire record for period having been retyped into computer (and slightly edited) in late 1990s. Many entries are little more than employee attendance record for day in question, although effort was made during some years to include brief indications of work each employee did that day. Post-1970 entries include reports of major developments, personnel information, reports of employee travel for department. In most years, initial entry includes complete list of employees and description of each one's assignment.
Typescript of 1844-1887 volumes was prepared by Edyth J. Romney and is cataloged as MS 2737 boxes 21-25.
