Documents were originally filed by year date during writing of the history, and this methodology has been for the most part continued in the collection's arrangement. Files are divided into four sections: folders 1-33 represent materials used by Willard Richards; folders 34-93 represent materals used by George A. Smith and Wilford Woodruff during 1854-1856; folders 94-98 represent information about Joseph Smith that was received after 1856; and folders 99-103 contain supplementary materials created by the Historian's Office staff.
